One of Athens City Council's newest members, Amy Flowers, is not only an Ohio University graduate student at age 19, she's also the youngest elected official in the state.
Flowers was elected to one of the council at-large positions in November and is already working on quite a few projects with other council members.
It seems like she just steps up to the plate and gets things done
said Nancy Bain, D-3rd Ward.
Right now, one of her major projects is the parking hang tags for the city. She is working alongside other council members to organize a city parking system.
Flowers is also working on an ordinance that will appropriate $359,544 to repair the Sunset Drive slips. Land has been sliding down the hills for years, creating a problem for people living nearby, and the project will help prevent future problems.
I want to continue working on projects with council and hopefully become more informed (about city issues) so that I can propose my own ordinances soon she said.
As a political science graduate student and a former president of the Ohio University Democrats, Flowers said one of her main goals is to get more students involved with city issues.
I want to work toward more student input with things she said.
The Beautification Day to be held by the men's water polo team was introduced by Flowers at Monday night's council meeting, and she said she plans to try to work with other student organizations to become more involved with the city.
She came up with that by herself
said Paul Wiehl, D-1st Ward.
Other members of council are pleased with how well she has stepped up to the projects they have been working on.
Flowers has the ability to work with a lot of different people, Bain said.
Despite her busy schedule, Flowers has shown she is capable of keeping things balanced, he said.
Flowers is involved with many student organizations, but she still has time to meet periodically with council members and other city officials to work on city ordinances.
While the new council has not been in session for long, Flowers is already doing great, said Jim Sands, D-at-large.
I campaigned with her
and I know what a hard worker she is and how focused she is
Sands said. I think she will be an excellent member of council.
Flowers has worked hard so far and will continue to work with council on street repairs and potential highway improvements.
I love being on council. It's more than I ever expected
and I really appreciate the experience
Flowers said.
