What may be Ohio University's most successful sports team continued its run of dominance this weekend, and we think it is time to highlight the club's success.
On Friday, our hockey team defeated No. 6 Iowa State for the regular season title of the Central States Collegiate Hockey League, earning an automatic trip to the American Collegiate Hockey Association's national tournament in Illinois.
The two-game sweep at home against Iowa State this weekend puts the Bobcats at 29 wins, six losses and two ties. The team has 4 games remaining on its schedule to pad out that winning record, facing Kent State on Friday.
Year in and year out, the hockey team stays competitive in its league. That has continued this season as well. The team passes well, checks hard and makes amazing saves. It's team chemistry perfected, right down to the most clichéd element of sports writing.
Perhaps most important for the average student who hasn't seen D2: The Mighty Ducks in years, attending a hockey game at Bird Arena is on the short list of things you must do before graduating.
It's not exactly a secret, but the games are just fun. For a few hours at Bird Arena, the home crowd could win over the most indifferent Bobcat. With everyone in attendance stomping their feet and taunting the visiting team, the place gets loud. And for those who say Athens has nothing to offer non-drinkers, we highly recommend they catch a game. Of course, tickets are a few bucks, but we think it's well worth the price of admission.
Coach Dan Morris summed up the team's philosophy last week pretty simply. Our goal is to beat every team we play
and we've done that he said. When you get into single-game eliminations and you play an opponent you haven't played at a national tournament setting you still want to keep that intact.
That makes sense to us. We wish the team luck in the next few weeks at doing so.
