PostLetter: Dining hall happy to serve respectful students

This letter is in regard to the article titled Dining halls tempt students to pilfer produce

which appeared in the Sept. 7 edition of The Post. While there are some who unfortunately do steal, we can proudly say, the majority of the students at Ohio University are very respectful of the resources the university provides. To generalize this to say that everyone will steal is unfair to those abiding by the university policies and procedures and specifically those of Culinary and Dining Operations.

Culinary and Dining Operations values customer input and we have made great progress efforts to carry the items that students request most frequently at our campus markets. These items include plastic utensils, as we recognize that students use these often within their residence hall. Another initiative we have is to bring fresh fruit and produce to the campus markets. Plus, remember that you may take one piece of fruit from the dining hall every time you leave.

OU students are our core customers and we make every effort possible to fulfill their requests. We encourage those students that have a suggestion to contact us via e-mail at dining@ohiou.edu, phone at 670-593-2970 or through Facebook or Twitter (oudining). Another method of communicating feedback is through the Dining Services Development Committee. This student-led group meets biweekly to discuss issues relevant to the dining venues, ranging from quality of food to taste-testing. You may join this group or share your feedback by contacting Brian Stephens at bs204106@ohiou.edu. If you would like to see something added to a dining venue, just ask or let us know. We are always here for our customers.

Every customer that walks though the doors of a dining hall has paid a price to enjoy a meal. When theft takes place, this increases our cost to do business, which can translate to higher prices for all. In the end, this places an even greater burden on the university and all paying customers.

To inform customers of our policies, we have posted signs at all dining halls reminding students that stealing is a crime and that those caught will be referred to judiciaries. We hope this letter helps inform students of the rules and consequences as well as the impact stealing from the dining halls may have on our operations and the overall campus environment. You have earned the right to attend this university through responsible decision-making and hard work. Please do not place your education at risk by taking resources that are already available within the dining venues and campus markets.

Gwyn Scott is the executive director of Culinary and Dining Operations. 4
