Sixteen track teams found their way to Oxford this past weekend for the Miami Invitational, a two-day meet in which both Bobcat teams were able to walk away with top-five finishes.
The Ohio men finished fifth and the the women placed fourth in a highly competitive field. Mid-American Conference rival Miami swept both team titles in a meet that also featured Notre Dame, Ball State and Butler.
It was a solid meet overall
it was everything we thought it would be coach Clay Calkins said. It would have been nice to finish up a little higher on the men's side. It was capable; we were down in some events today where I thought we should have been up.
The men recorded 14 top-eight finishes, good for 64.5 points, but still finished well behind Miami's score of 204.
The sprinters and distance runners led the team, scoring 54 points. Brian King, Austin Schiele and Shamus Eaton finished second, third and seventh, respectively, in the 5000-meter run.
Excellent showing on the distance side of things Calkins said. The 5K's for both the men and women was a shining point of the meet for us. They did a great job.
Dan Bailey won the 400-meter dash and took second in the 200-meter dash. He also ran on the 4-by-100 relay that finished third.
Jarrel Taylor finished fifth in the 200-meter dash and sixth in the 100-meter dash and Chip Cox took fourth in the 100-meter dash.
Everybody is stepping up; it's a team effort
Taylor said. I think there is no way but up for us and we're doing a great job so far.
Jaclyn Lugaila continued to be consistent for the Bobcats, winning both the shot put and the hammer throw for the Ohio women. She has won both events two meets in a row and remains the lone Bobcat to qualify for the NCAA Mideast Regional.
Carime Reinhart was the only other Ohio woman to win an event. She won the 5000-meter run, finishing ahead of fellow Bobcat Andrea Maas.
Since we've gone against BG and Miami
it's good to see where we are in the MAC
Reinhart said. Everybody works together and (assistant) coach (Mitch) Bentley does a great job getting our workouts ready and making sure we're all healthy. I definitely think we're not even close to peaking yet.
Ohio plays host to the Bobcat Invitational this weekend. The 'Cats have one more meet after which at home, the Ohio Open, before the end of the season.
