Terrie Hitchings

Grad student confirmed dead

An Ohio University graduate student has died.

Terrie Jean Hitchings was a second-year graduate student in OU's Patton College of Education and Human Services.

“The office of the dean of students is saddened to have received notice today about the loss  of one our students," Dean of Students Ryan Lombardi said in a statement. "Our condolences go out to her family and friends.”

A representative from O'Bleness Memorial Hospital said Hitchings was not listed as an inpatient there.

Athens Sheriff Pat Kelly said he received a call from the Athens County 911 Emergency Communications center at about 10 p.m. last night. Hitchings had been found dead in her apartment in The Plains.

The center is required to call him about any deaths in the county, he said.

Kelly said he did not suspect foul play in Hitchings' death.

He added that he believed Hitchings' death was caused by "health problems" but that her body had been sent for an autopsy.

Harold Thompson, Athens County coroner, conducted an autopsy today and said it "did not show any abnormalities."

There is no cause of death yet, he said, and toxicology reports will take up to 8 weeks.

Hitchings lived in Nelsonville, according to OU's student directory.

She graduated from Nelsonville-York High School in 1981, according to her LinkedIn profile.
