Metaphorically Speaking: Hey, Mom

I hate those days when nothing ever seems to go my way: My hair went flat, there was a pop quiz, I got in a fight with my roommate, etc. It seems like those days occur more often than the awesome days where everything seems to go right.

But there is one thing that always makes me have one of those awesome days, my mom. Not only does my mom drop what she is doing to drive 30 miles away to get a book for me that was nowhere to be found in Athens, but my mom is my best friend. And I'm almost certain many other people at Ohio University can say the same thing about their moms.

Moms are like the Holy Grail - the ultimate reward and I'm certain at least my brother and my sister would say the same thing. The Holy Grail is a reward that serves a mass purpose, always makes you happy and you almost feel as though you cannot live without. Well, who can't live without their mom?

In high school, who was the person that was always there cheering for you, no matter what extra circular activities you were involved in? Who always picks up the phone when you call? Who learned how to text and use smiley faces so she could keep in contact with you? Who will meet you halfway across Ohio to help you pick out a new laptop when yours suddenly dies? Who is willing to give you money when you want it? Your mom.

I don't think moms receive enough credit for what they do for us until we move away from home. After moving to college, we are quick to discover just exactly what it feels like to not have our mommy there anymore. Especially Saturday morning - in retrospect, calls Friday night from mom warning to come home soon, or else, weren't so bad. It's nice to have someone tell you to follow curfew so you don't waste Saturday feeling tired. No one to do our laundry, no one to clean up the kitchen after meals and no one to remind you of important dates and events.

We take advantage of our Holy Grail when it is tangible to us every day. And now that we don't have it every day, it is time for everyone to take other measures to let your Holy Grail know that it will never be forgotten and will never go unnoticed.
