OU alumna receives help from Habitat

The Ohio University Coalition of Athens County Habitat for Humanity broke ground yesterday for the 20th house in the county.

Robin Brigante, 43, and her son, Treavis Poynter, a student at Hocking College, are the recipients of the house, located on West Fourth Street in The Plains.

Brigante became paraplegic after a car accident that occurred the same day she was scheduled to take her last exam in the fall of 2004. She received her bachelor of specialized studies degree in the spring of 2005, which was better late than never

she said. Robin has shown incredible strength as she earned her degree said OU President Roderick McDavis, who spoke at the groundbreaking ceremony.

The site was purchased by OU employee James Yute and his wife, Maggie, with the help of the Community Housing Improvement Program.

There is divine intervention that's been entered in here said Terry Russell, executive director for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Ohio, which is also sponsoring the build.

This project is the first of its kind for the National Alliance on Mental Illness Ohio, yet Russell is enthusiastic about it not being their last.

One day at a time

one client at a time

he said, promising to do similar projects statewide in the future.

More than 60 OU students involved in Habitat for Humanity, in addition to about 20 interior architecture students, will work on the house, which is scheduled to be completed by June 30.
