Gary Neiman, dean of the College of Health and Human Services, announced last week that he will retire in June.
Neiman has been dean of the college since he came to Ohio University in 1999. Before that, he was a professor and associate dean at Kent State University. He said after 36 years in higher education, this was the time to retire.
It's a good time with good health and good sense of humor to turn this over to other people with new and even better ideas
Neiman said.
Neiman said he is proud of the 25 percent enrollment increase the college has seen during his tenure, as well as the unification of all of the schools in Grover Center. But he said that going forward, the college's dean will need to work on finding resources.
There's so much to do Neiman said. There's the issue of staffing. We need to find the resources for more faculty for our 3
400 majors
and we need to be more successful in attracting grant funding. We need to find space. G? That's really going to be a problem into the future.
Neiman, who said he is very proud to call himself a Bobcat, is planning to stay in Athens. He said he will continue to work with OU, although it is not clear whether in an administrative or teaching position.
I've focused on being a dean for the last 10 years
but when I came here
I defined myself as a speech language pathologist and as a clinician as well
Neiman said. And that's a part of my life that I haven't been able to focus on for the past nine-plus years.
The provost plans to appoint a search committee this fall, and Neiman said he hopes the university will have someone ready to take the position July 1.
