The Ohio Department of Health has confirmed two additional cases of swine flu in Franklin County, bringing the total number of cases in Ohio to three.
The ODH confirmed the new cases of H1N1 virus in two Franklin County males, ages 31 and 33, on Saturday. The two men and the 9-year-old boy from Lorain County, who was Ohio's first confirmed case, have all been sent home to recover. One of the men worked at the Ohio State University Medical Center, according to The Associated Press.
These confirmations underscore the need for Ohioans to pay attention to updates and take steps to protect themselves and their loved ones
said ODH Director Alvin D. Jackson, M.D., in a press release on Saturday.
The symptoms of swine flu are very similar to those of the normal flu, and include a fever more than 100 degrees, sore throat, coughing, stuffy nose, body aches, headache, chills and fatigue, ODH spokeswoman Sarah Morman said.
ODH encourages those who experience these flu-like symptoms to be tested for swine flu.
Warning signs that need immediate attention include shortness of breath, chest or abdomen pain, sudden dizziness, confusion or severe vomiting, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
The most important thing you can do right now to keep yourself healthy is to wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water Morman said.
While three cases have now been confirmed, the ODH continues to test possible cases throughout the state. The total number of confirmed cases in the U.S is 286 as of yesterday afternoon with one death
in Texas.
As of Sunday, the ODH has reported three probable cases - an 18-year-old male in Franklin County, a 39-year-old female in Holmes County and a 39-year-old female in Portage County.
There are also 34 suspected cases, according to the ODH, including one in Washington County, which borders Athens County.
