Despite a loss to Miami in the Mid-American Conference Tournament Championship game Saturday, Lauren Kohn and the rest of the Bobcats consider this season a success.
And rightfully so. This year's team was the first to make it to the championship game since 1986, and the first to make it past the quarterfinals since 1995.
Kohn will leave the program along with fellow seniors Simone Redd and Quintana Ward. Kohn was honored this season as MAC Player of the Week for the weeks of January 28 and February 4.
Lauren Kohn definitely has a lot to be proud of this year
coach Sylvia Crawley said.
Kohn was also honored as the ESPN the Magazine Academic All-District 4 First Team and made the Academic All-America Second Team. She will end her career just three points shy of 1,000 total career points at Ohio in just two seasons of play. Kohn was the Player of the Game in Ohio's quarterfinal win against Eastern Michigan.
I think besides winning (Saturday) there wasn't anything I'd change Kohn said. I'm very proud of our team I'm very proud of our seniors and I hope that going out this way will set an example and leave a mark on some of the other players and pave the way for future MAC championships in this program.
During the season, Redd became the 12th player in Ohio history to reach 1,000 career points. She ends her career with a total 1,125 points.
Ward also left her mark on the record books for Ohio in the career assists category. She ends her career with a total 464 assists, the second all-time behind Marti Heckman's 810 from 1982-86.
In her two seasons with Ohio, Crawley now holds a 38-25 record, 4-2 in the tournament.
The team ends with a 20-13 record overall, the first 20-win season since the 1994-95 season. Their total 2,330 points is also a new single-season high for the program. The previous record was 2,298 points in the 1985-86 season.
I told my players to hold their heads up high (Saturday
) Crawley said. I'm extremely proud of what they accomplished this year.
Ohio went as high as second in NCAA rankings this season for 3-point percentage and their 234 baskets made beyond the arc is a new single-season program record. The previous record of 189 was set in 2001-02.
Not only were they the highest 3-point scoring team in program history, the Bobcats were also the highest single-season rebounding team of all-time, totaling 1,359 on the season.
I think coach Crawley and her staff have done a tremendous job of turning this program around
Kohn said.
Crawley said the accomplishments of this season make her hopeful for the future of the program.
I'm just honored to be the person to spearhead what it is they're doing
Crawley said, but they're the ones that actually go out and execute.
