Man in custody after standoff with sheriff's department

An Amesville man is in custody Friday after a two-hour standoff with police, during which shots from an assault rifle were fired from inside the shooter’s home.

A brother of the shooter called 911 just before 10:00 a.m. after the suspect allegedly shot his dog and refused to put down his semi-automatic AK-47 assault rifle, according to a release from the Athens County Sheriff’s department.

The sheriff’s "Special Response Team," a team deployed during hostage or standoff situations, and several deputies secured the scene, and the suspect surrendered peacefully, Athens County Sheriff Pat Kelly said.

The brother who called 911 was inside the house during the standoff and coordinated with police while encouraging the suspect to exit the house unarmed.

Police have yet to release the name of the 44-year-old alleged shooter but said the firearm was legally owned and that he had no history of mental illness.

The suspect had non-recent charges of resisting arrest and assault on a police officer, Kelly said.

A sister of the suspect was also in the house at the time of the standoff but was permitted to leave the house, according to the release.
