Graduate Student Senate welcomes new members

New Graduate Student Senate senators and executive positions were sworn into office tonight after another major increase in voting this year.

Voting in this year’s election was up 122 percent, following an 80 percent increase from the previous year, said Tracy Kelly, Graduate Student Senate president.

This year, 378 graduate, professional and medical students voted in the election compared to the 170 students that voted last year, according to the election results.

“We are increasing voter turnout tremendously every year,” Kelly said.

Molly Yanity, vice president for Communication, was named the GSS representative for the search committee that will seek a new dean of the Graduate College after Executive Vice President and Provost Pam Benoit requested a graduate student representative. Current Dean Rathindra Bose is leaving at the end of this academic year.

Senate also received word that President Roderick McDavis supports the expected $215,000 graduate student stipends increase; the recommendation will now continue to the Board of Trustees, Kelly said.

“We ended the year really strong,” Kelly said.
