Health care, campus safety discussions to round out GSS meeting

As flu season approaches and the number of waiting patients in Campus Care increases, Ohio University’s Graduate Student Senate will address the topic of health care tonight with an analysis of student insurance benefits.

Tonight’s GSS meeting will feature the launch of an ad-hoc health care committee that will provide input to senate members as they recommend health care improvements to administration.

Kris Grey, the newest GSS chairman, will give a presentation highlighting ideas for improving OU’s health care for the transgendered community. Grey will discuss the need for additional health care benefits and affordable coverage for those in the process of a sex change.

GSS is also examining ways to make OU’s campus safer, an important initiative following two reported rapes this fall, GSS President Tracy Kelly said.

One of senate’s plans is to work with Residence Life to create neighborhood watch programs throughout Athens.

“It’s an issue to work together in the community and take responsibility,” Kelly said. “I think it would be very beneficial to encourage looking out for one another. Keeping an eye out will also allow for a sense of ownership of the community.”

GSS will meet at 7 p.m. tonight in 235 Walter Hall.
