Women's Golf: Ohio ties for 4th after sudden-death playoff

Upon tallying her scorecard at the end of regulation play yesterday at the University of Dayton Fall Invitational, Ohio sophomore Megan Weaver received a pleasant surprise.

I honestly thought I was shooting in the mid-80s

Weaver said. I didn't add up my score until the very end.

Weaver finished with an 8-over-par 78, landing her in a first-place tie.

I usually have some idea as to how far over par I am during my round Weaver said. But today was one of those days where I just didn't want to know. I waited until the end and was pleasantly surprised.

The tournament was slated for 36 holes, but sudden-death playoff holes were needed when Cincinnati's Kate Moore ended play tied with Weaver.

To break the tie, Weaver and Moore played the course's first hole. It was the only extra hole needed, as Moore sunk a long putt for birdie to seal the playoff win.

We were both on the green Weaver said. She had a really long putt for birdie and I had a makeable putt for par.

The greens were tough, but she stepped up and knocked it in. I guess it was better for her to make a putt to win than for me to miss one to lose, but of course I still wish I could have pulled it off.

Despite the second-place finish

Weaver thought she could have performed better than she did.

I was a lot less consistent in my swing than I was yesterday, Weaver said. Yesterday I hit the ball really well, and today I didn't know where it was going.

As a team

the Bobcats finished in a three-way tie for 4th place

28 strokes behind Cincinnati's champion.

Jordan Fesh shot a 165 (+25) for the tournament. Colleen Lienesch improved her score by four strokes after one day of the tournament and finished the tournament with a 166 (+26) total.

Weaver said the team wished its final result had been different.

Everyone wishes they would have played better, she said. It was definitely a scoreable course. We all kind of thought we would play better than we did Monday.

The Bobcats will next compete at the Ohio Open at Ohio State University's Scarlet Course Monday and Tuesday.

the Bobcats turned things around yesterday.

Ohio finished the University of Dayton Invitational in 5th place at the 17-team tournament.

Phil Gieseter and Tim Gusweiler each shot 150 (+8) and tied for 10th place.

Coach Bob Cooley was pleased with their play.

Those two really set an example today, Cooley said. Tim was steady for 18 holes, Phil birdied his last three. Both of them just played really well.

After shooting an 81 (+10) on Monday

Paul Grauer cut eight strokes yesterday and posted a 73 (+2). A double-bogey on the 18th hole ended what was an even-par round

and he finished at 154 (+12).

Seniors Chad Warmbein and Stewart Jamieson each posted forgettable scores. They entered the clubhouse at 158 (+16)

and tied for 53rd place.

The younger guys kind of set the tone this week, Cooley said. They did a good job of staying in the fairways.
