Editorial: Champions

With all the fervor surrounding Ohio's biggest athletics teams, readers might be surprised to learn that Ohio has other sports ' and they're not doing half bad. In fact, several Ohio teams, including field hockey, women's basketball and track and field, have performed excellently this year.

The accomplishments of these athletes should not go unnoticed. The Ohio track and field team recently dominated the Ohio Open meet, winning all 15 events in an unprecedented sweep. Ohio field hockey won the Mid-American Conference Championship and advanced to the NCAA Tournament. Going the furthest of any Ohio team this year, volleyball had an outstanding season and narrowly lost to Purdue in the first round of the NCAA Volleyball Championship.

There's been a lot of negativity surrounding OU and the Ohio Athletics Department in the past few years, from four varsity sports being cut to an athletic director who left $700,000 off the budget, and from gambling rings to sex-tape scandals. It's nice to see that there are still Ohio athletes who are able to do what they love ' and excel at it.
