Gunshot origin still unknown

Ohio University administrators met with residents of six East Green dorms last night to quiet rumors about a gunshot reported on campus early yesterday morning.

But after a full day of investigating, they still had little news to report.

OU Police have been unable to track down the source of a gunshot heard in the courtyard between Tiffin and Gamertsfelder halls at 6:15 a.m. yesterday.

Freshman Trace Zemites told police he captured audio of the gunshot while taping himself for a class project in a Tiffin Hall bathroom.

University officials sent an emergency text message and e-mail alert to students, faculty and staff at about 10 a.m., informing them of the gunshot but stating that there was no imminent threat to campus.

Additional police officers were called in to provide extra patrols on campus and assist with the investigation.

After checking each room in the surrounding dorms and conducting interviews with students, OU officials said they still haven't tracked down the source of the noise.

We don't really have anything new to report

OU Police Chief Andrew Powers said last night.

Concealed weapons are prohibited from campus, but OU does not have a policy that bans firearms outright, Powers said.

Various OU administrators met with East Green residents and Residence Life staff last night to answer questions and calm concerns.

We don't have any new information but it's more to answer questions and clear up any misinformation said Ryan Lombardi, dean of students. There is no specific agenda we just want to address student concerns.

Administrators met with students in Tiffin, Gamertsfelder, Washington, Jefferson, Read and Johnson halls.

We want to make sure students know we care about their well being

and that can't be done through an e-mail or tweet. It's got to be face-to-face

said Kent Smith, OU's vice president for Student Affairs.

OU Police ask that anyone who heard or saw anything suspicious in the East Green area of campus call 740-593-1911.
