Ohio will try to sustain the success of the past few meets even though the distance runners are resting this week.
After competing against non-conference teams, the event this weekend gives the team a cursory look at some conference foes such as Eastern Michigan, Buffalo, Bowling Green and host Toledo.
“(It’s) good to see how everyone in the conference is doing and just kind of see what everyone has,” coach Clay Calkins said.
Ohio’s distance runners have been strong this season but will get a rest as most of the events are for sprinters, jumpers and throwers, Calkins said.
Unlike the first events of the outdoor season where only individual results matter, team scores will be kept for the first time in Ohio’s outdoor season.
The meet begins at 10 a.m., but the women’s events do not start until 11:30 a.m. with women’s pole vault.
Beecham honored
Senior Annie Beecham was named the Mid-American Conference track Athlete of the Week Tuesday. She received the award after breaking the school record in the 10,000-meter run last Saturday at the Stanford Invitational.
She owns the school record for 3,000-meter run and 5,000-meter run, both of which she earned during the indoor season.
Calkins said Beecham was deserving of the honor.
“Anytime you are named athlete of the week it’s a big honor,” Calkins said. “She ran a great race at the Stanford Invitational, it was well deserved.”
Beecham is in eighth place in the NCAA East Region and 22nd nationally in the 10K, according to the U.S. Track and Field and Cross Country Coaches rankings.
