After many hours of rehearsal, seven School of Dance seniors will get the chance to showcase the final products of their senior capstone projects during the Senior Dance Concert.
The concert will consist of four group numbers and three solo acts, all choreographed by the graduating seniors. Steven Evans, a senior studying dance, choreographed one of the group pieces. Evans’ arrangement is titled “Petrichor” and is based on the piece “Cloudburst” by renowned composer Eric Whitacre.
The Cincinnati native admitted that choreographing a number with nine dancers came with some challenges.
“It’s a completely other beast in terms of knowing where people are in the space, what they’re doing,” Evans said. “When you’re creating with other people, you have to react within the moment of it happening.”
Fellow senior Earlyn Whitehead, also studying dance, said he has enjoyed working with this group of seniors during the past four years.
“We are a very tight-knit group and we’re very supportive of each other,” Whitehead said. “I know that I would not be the performer, choreographer (and) person that I am today without my classmates,” Whitehead said.
Evans said the senior class started with almost 30 members and has since dwindled.
Whitehead said her capstone project, titled “Collective Dimensions,” has a dynamic, groovy feel to it because her skills as a choreographer have grown during the past four years.
“I didn’t think that I had it in me to become a choreographer,” Whitehead said.
After dedicating herself to becoming a better choreographer, her junior dance composition was chosen to be performed at the American College Dance Festival.
“(It’s great) to know that I put my best foot forward and what I put in is what I got out,” Whitehead said.
Along with Whitehead, Evans and seniors Mariah Berardelli, Alicia Hann, Kelsey Maiolo, Michael O’Neill and Kimberly Murry will showcase their talents for the last time.
“It has been a really good four years… I am really excited to share their success in this concert, as well as the accomplishment of our capstone projects together,” Whitehead said.
