APR Ratings: Ohio athletics above the grade in academics

Ohio athletics earned high marks when the NCAA released its annual Academic Progress Rate report this week.

Ten of Ohio's 16 varsity teams scored at or above the national average in their sport. The Bobcats also placed nine squads in the top half of the Mid-American Conference and 11 teams finished at or above the national average for public institutions.

It was another encouraging year for Ohio academically, improving slightly on the program's numbers from last year.

Academic excellence is a hallmark initiative for our athletic program

Athletic Director Jim Schaus said. It's extremely important for our student-athletes to perform well in all aspects of academics.

I'm very pleased. We're doing well.

Volleyball continued to bear the torch for Ohio athletics earning a perfect 1000 score and receiving special recognition from the NCAA. Softball also earned that honor with a score of 992. Each was in the 90th percentile for its sport.

Baseball (975 third in MAC)

men's golf (997

second in MAC) and women's golf (992

third in MAC) all finished in the 70th percentile or better for their sport and solidified Ohio's spot as one of the better academic programs in the MAC.

Football and men's basketball also scored above the national average for their particular sports.

Other programs

however

didn't shine so brightly.

The women's indoor track team finished just below the national standard. But the women's basketball team (944) was the low point

finishing a full 22 points below the 966 national average.

On the men's side

wrestling brought up the rear again this year. The team finished just four points below the national number

937
