In the Nov. 7 edition of The Post, Joe Lorek, an alumnus, criticizes OU students for leaving the Temple vs. Ohio game before it was over. He said students were rude to do so. Here’s a response to Joe.
Joe, I am glad you support Bobcat football. If your season tickets are the most expensive available (Platinum in the Tower), they cost you almost $300. More likely, they’re less than $100.
By contrast, every OU student is forced to pay about $800 per year to support Bobcat athletics. The vast majority of that goes to football.
President Roderick McDavis falsely insists that students demand football at the highest level. As you have observed, the students don’t care about it nearly as much as you do.
I know you mean nothing bad by what you are saying, and I really do appreciate your loyalty to OU.
But if you think about it, it’s pretty nuts to force students to pay $800 a year to provide games for you and also expect them to pretend they care even when they don’t.
The kids are paying for the whole shebang, Joe. They’re paying through the nose. They’re paying for it with student loans and part-time jobs.
Instead of calling them rude, you should thank them for their generous contributions to your entertainment.
In fact, you should be glad that students don’t protest the unjust athletics tax by occupying the field and refusing to allow any games to be played.
