With various recent performances and three released singles, indie rock band Guy Music has been showcasing its sound at several venues in Athens, including houses and establishments, since debuting last year.
Henry Cohen, a sophomore studying music production and recording industry, plays guitar and is the lead singer for Guy Music.
“We had a really explosive start that immediately allowed us to play because we did two battle of the bands,” Cohen said. “We did well in those. Then we did battle of the greens, and then we did Union battle of the bands, that was huge. Then we won the The Union battle of the bands. That was our third show ever.”
Guy Music consists of four members, including Cohen, Finn Shannon, a sophomore studying music production and recording industry, Miles Weaver, a senior studying music production and recording industry, and Matthias Weaver, a senior studying general studies.
The group attended high school together and first came together to practice in September of 2025. Cohen is the band’s lead songwriter, and he and Shannon play guitar and sing vocals. Miles Weaver plays drums and cymbals and his twin brother Matthias Weaver plays bass. All members contribute to writing their parts from Cohen’s framework.
“I think especially me and Matthias have a strong, coherent understanding of what the vision is,” Miles Weaver said. “Not just what we sound like, but our whole brand, and we have no shortage of feedback and aesthetic musings. We're all very involved and interested in the vision.”
After its initial success in winning All Campus Radio Network’s battle of the bands in The Union last year, Guy Music aimed to perform as many shows as possible while maximizing time in the recording studio.
Guy Music released its first single, “Driving Barefoot” on March 14, 2026, after the band’s debut. The band records in a “nondescript location” in a warehouse.
Guy Music describes its sound as “power rock,” but Cohen has given the band the term “loser pop” to make its genre a little more interesting.
“I always think of Pavement,” Matthias Weaver said. “Then there’s definitely a power pop element to it. We’re definitely a Weezer element too.”
“Humor is a huge part of the band,” Cohen said, “We’re trying to be silly and sincere. We’re not worried of making fools of ourselves, we're not trying to come off as cool, tough, macho or aloof. We're trying to come off pleasant, enjoyable, happy, funny.”
Guy Music is currently working on its first album, “Sara’s Secret,” which the band hopes to complete before the end of the school year.
The goal is to take Guy Music as far as possible and make a living as a professional band. Cohen said the ultimate dream is to become a “classic” band, and all four of them have high hopes and expectations for themselves.
“One of the things that we have in common, all four of us, is that all of our dads wanted to be rock stars,” Cohen said. “My dad wanted to be a rock star, Miles and Matthias’ dad wanted to be a rock star, and Finn’s dad wanted to be a rock star. So this is in our DNA.”
Members of Guy Music recalled attempts from other bands to recruit them, and clarified they intend to stick together and see their shared dream through.
Guy Music expressed gratitude for every person who has supported the band and for the music scene in Athens, which they credited as a talented field of artists and an ideal place to grow an audience.
“This scene is incredible,” Cohen said. “So many great bands, so many fun people, so many great musicians. We’ve been fortunate enough to get our start here, and we think that we can potentially shine some light on some of the great acts that are here.”
Guy Music will take to the stage at The Union on Oct. 10. Updates on performances are posted on its Instagram. New releases and more details about the band are available on its website.
