For one Ohio University alumnus, post-college late night calzone cravings were too much to bear - so he bought the local D.P. Dough.
Matt Crumpton, a 2004 OU graduate, bought the restaurant, 374 Richland Ave., in October, and he and his parents, Mark and Kim, officially took over ownership from Jay Shapiro Jan. 1.
Crumpton graduated from OU with a degree in education and a minor in political science, he said, adding that prior to purchasing the restaurant, he worked as a business lawyer in Columbus.
His decision to buy the Athens restaurant stemmed from his love for its calzones during his time at OU, Crumpton said.
While in Columbus, Crumpton and a friend decided they wanted to open a D.P. Dough in the area.
A good friend of mine (and I were) obsessed with D.P. Dough
and we wanted to open one in Columbus Crumpton said.
He contacted the Athens location in 2008 about possibly opening one in Columbus, he said, but was then given an opportunity to buy the Athens location.
It was the right opportunity at the right time Crumpton said.
As the new owner of D.P. Dough, Crumpton said he is planning to make a few changes to restaurant.
Crumpton is now using social media to gain more customers, he said, adding that the restaurant's Facebook group has gained 800 members since Jan. 1.
Another change Crumpton said he will make is, starting Feb. 1, the restaurant will be open everyday for lunch.
It's definitely fun to come back in Athens and be in Athens more
he said.
Former owner Jay Shapiro could not be reached for comment.
