Social science students see new advising option

In an attempt to meet the needs of students in the College of Arts and Sciences and University College, a new advising center for social sciences has been opened on the first floor of Bentley Hall.

The advising center, which opened last Monday, is a collaboration between the two colleges and will be run by faculty during their office hours.

The colleges opened the center to provide more advising opportunities for the 6,564 students enrolled in both colleges, said Caryn Asleson, the assistant dean for undergraduate student affairs in the College of Arts and Sciences.

The College of Arts and Sciences came up with the idea after the success of their Walk-In Wednesday advising sessions, which allowed students to receive advising without scheduling an appointment, Asleson said.

Walk-In Wednesdays were very popular

he said. We thought ... maybe this would even be more convenient for students.

Similar to that of the department of psychology's advising center located in Porter Hall, students from both colleges are able to sign in on the first floor of Bentley Hall and consult a full-time adviser or faculty member at any time from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday through Friday rather than setting up an appointment with their actual adviser.

However, the center isn't necessarily permanent, Asleson said.

We want student feedback he said. If it's not working then we won't do it ... this is just a value added.

The project is still in its beginning stages.

For example (yesterday) there were no chairs

said Laura Chapman, assistant dean of the University College. It's a work in progress ... I think any way we can offer more advising to anyone is a good thing.

Sophomore Austin Riggs, who plans to declare psychology as his major, said he doesn't prefer either advising style.

I wouldn't say it's better or worse

Riggs said. I'm fine with whatever is easier for my adviser.
