Auditor looks to next term

The Athens County Auditor officially announced that she will seek re-election as county auditor in the November election.

Jill Thompson, who has served as auditor since 2000, will run unopposed in the November election.

I think that's a huge compliment

she said. It's truly an honor and humbling.

Thompson makes $67,855 a year in her position.

A 1992 graduate of Ohio University, Thompson was appointed auditor in 2000 after Dave Lovett retired. She then beat fellow alumni Ric Wasserman in the 2002 election with a 65 percent majority.

I certainly was interested she said. I thought I could do it and I thought I could do it well.

Thompson said she enjoys her position, especially her interaction with other county departments.

I really enjoy the relationships we have with other offices

she said.

She said many people do not understand the difference between working in the private and public sector, where officials have to be willing to be at the people's beckon call.

As auditor, Thompson manages many facets of real estate, including the valuing and transferring of property, she said. Her office handles payroll for the 600 to 700 employees of the county government, administers vendor's licenses and - the position most people are familiar with - is in charge of weights and measures for the county.

As part of her role in weights and measures, Thompson is responsible for the stickers on gas pumps and scales and electronic scanners at supermarkets. In fact, if problems with those scanners arise - such as registering an incorrect price - citizens can contact Thompson.

Thompson said she has absolutely no idea if she will run again in 2010.

I never would've dreamt I would be here five years ago

she said.
