Late Tuesday, the loser of the Democratic nomination for Athens County commissioner filed a complaint requesting a hand recount of the ballots.
Charlie Adkins of Albany filed the complaint in the Athens County Court of Common Pleas after he lost to Jim Pancake of Nelsonville in a coin toss March 27.
The March 4 primary election resulted in a tie of 2,854 between Adkins and Pancake. According to the Ohio Revised Code, a winner had to be decided by lot ' which can include methods such as a coin toss or picking straws ' on the day of the official count '-
but I think it is something we should re-look at if the courts agree Adkins said.
Pancake said that he would not have requested a hand recount if he had lost the election. He said he is confident about his nomination.
I think I will still win with a recount Pancake said.
He also had questions about who will pay for the recount.
The cost for a recount will be about $3,500, Adkins said. Each of the 69 affected precincts would cost $50 for a hand recount.
People have already promised to help Adkins pay for the recount if he has to pay for it himself. He said he would have to pay for it unless the recount declared him the winner, in which case the county would pick up the cost.
The court will decide whether to allow the recount, and Adkins said he believed the parties involved would have a say about how to conduct the recount.
