Board of Trustees to discuss smoke-free campus, improvements

More than two months have passed since Ohio University’s Board of Trustees last met on campus in Walter Hall.

The board is meeting again, this time at the Pickerington Center in Lancaster, Ohio.

Trustees will meet Thursday to discuss the establishment of the Center for Intervention Research in Schools and a new entrepreneurship certificate offered by the management department in the College of Business. They will also discuss upcoming dean searches, such as the one for the Scripps College of Communication dean.

Back in July, the Ohio Board of Regents passed a resolution concerning the promotion of tobacco-free Ohio campuses, which will be another discussion point at Thursday’s meeting.

“Ohio University and its Board of Trustees will certainly discuss the Board of Regents’ recommendations regarding becoming a tobacco-free campus,” said Peter Mather, OU’s Board of Trustees secretary, in a statement.

Jo Ellen Sherow, director of the Office of Research Compliance, will speak to trustees about how the office ensures researchers follow policies and regulations.

OU’s Faculty Senate Executive Committee also will meet with trustees Thursday.

Both Faculty Senate Chairwoman Elizabeth Sayrs and Vice Chairman David Thomas will be reporting to the board, said Beth Quitslund, secretary of the Faculty Senate executive committee.

Both Sayrs and Thomas could not be reached for comment.

One of the resolutions to be discussed at Thursday’s meeting addresses the approval of two capital projects including the replacement of the Kantner roof and improvements to Clippinger Laboratories.

The projects will cost the university $800,000 and $1.5 million, respectively, if they are approved by the trustees.

At the last meeting in June, all of the Board of Trustees’ resolutions passed unanimously under new Trustees Chairwoman Gene Harris.

Also in June, Diana Hisey and J. Patrick Campbell were appointed as a trustee and national trustee, respectively.

National trustees do not have voting rights on the board, nor do student trustees.

Allison Arnold is serving her second term as a student trustee along with Amanda Roden, who is in her first term.
