The Bobcats fell just short of remaining perfect in the Mid-American Conference this weekend.
Ohio (6-7, 4-1 MAC) started its weekend right, jumping all over Central Michigan (6-7, 3-3 MAC) in a 4-2 victory on Saturday afternoon. However, the Bobcats lost their first MAC game of the season to Kent State (2-12, 2-2 MAC) yesterday in a 3-2 overtime thriller.
Forward Torrie Albini led the Bobcat offense all weekend, scoring three goals, including one with a minute left in regulation that forced overtime with Kent State. Unfortunately for Ohio, it wasn't enough as the Golden Flashes prevailed in overtime, ruining Ohio's previously unblemished MAC record.
We're slightly disappointed. We should have taken care of business in regulation. We had the opportunities
and we really only have ourselves to blame for that coach Neil Macmillan said.
Ohio started the weekend with a dominating performance against Central Michigan, scoring three goals in the first half and holding the Chippewas to just three shots. Goalkeeper Jen Cote's streak of scoreless minutes ended in the second half of the game when Central Michigan's Kelly Jordan pushed one past the Bobcat goalie.
Cote had not allowed a goal in her previous 229:38.Albini scored less than two minutes later on a penalty stroke, essentially clinching the game for the Bobcats. However, while Ohio controlled Central Michigan in a relatively easy win, their dominance did not produce the same result the following afternoon against Kent State. Despite leading the Golden Flashes in every offensive statistical category, Ohio could not come away with a victory.
It's just disappointing because we had our chances and we didn't take advantage of them midfielder Rachelle Coetzee said.
Nevertheless, as upsetting as their first MAC loss may be, Ohio does remain atop the conference standings.
We're still sitting in the driver's seat in the MAC
and with some corrections I hope that we will come back next weekend and continue to play Ohio hockey
Albini said.
The Bobcats are back in action this weekend, playing host to two teams they have already beaten. Ohio will face Ball State at 3 p.m. Friday and Miami at 1 p.m. Saturday. Both games will be played at Peggy Pruitt Field.
