Student artist creates a name through comics

Recently signed by Marvel Studios for his graphic novel, Ohio University junior Shaun Foran is taking his artistic talent all the way to a successful future.

Using his comic book deal as an avenue to push his clothing line, he's also turning his dreams into reality.

I see everything as stepping stones and comics are a way for me to branch out and do what I want to do

Foran said, adding that one day he hopes to see his comic made into a movie.

Foran initially received more than $50,000 for the first issue of his graphic novel, Downsh1ft, to be part of Marvel's Icon Comics. The graphic novel will debut September 2007 with the help of his Web site, www.studioneverendingdream.com, where he provides promotional posters, a preview for the novel and a blog. It's also the site for his clothing line, Neverending Dream.

One of Foran's promotional posters can also be seen at the local comic book store he frequently visits, Universe of Superheroes, 19 W. Washington St. The store carries comic books and graphic novels from Marvel and DC Comics, two of the largest comic industries ' and neither of them are easy places to get into, said David Canario, store manager.

It's really hard to break into comics he said. There are different ways to get into the business but none of them are easy.

The business itself is changing, Canario said. DC incorporates real-life situations into its stories, while Marvel has more of a family dynamic in its work, such as the Spider-Man and Fantastic Four comics, he said.

They (comic companies) all have that sense of realism now but Marvel had that realism molded into that fantasy and escapism Canario said.
