Wrestling: Bobcat keeps winning streak alive at 5

The Bobcats left the state of North Carolina with a split.

Ohio lost to North Carolina 26-12 on Saturday, but defeated North Carolina State 30-12 yesterday.

Erik Schuth and Quentin Keyes both contributed two victories on the Atlantic Coast Conference road trip.

The wins signify something different for each wrestler.

For Schuth, the two wins add to his winning streak, which is now at five. He has not lost since returning from injury on Jan. 15.

What's more impressive is that he's been able to win in different ways, pushing his record to 10-2.

The big thing is he's been good in all three positions

coach Joel Greenlee said. He's been on top he's been on bottom and he's been on his feet. So he's real hard to wrestle.

In addition to wrestling well in all positions, Schuth has showcased his endurance.

In his first match back, against Northern Illinois, he won in triple-overtime. He followed that with another overtime win against Michigan State.

Yesterday, he moved up from the 187-pound weight class to the 197-pound class. Chris Iammarino usually starts at 197 pounds but hurt his knee against North Carolina. Greenlee said it was nothing serious.

Plus, Nick Purdue was on the trip with the team, and Greenlee thought he could get a win in the 187-pound division.

The move worked well as both Purdue and Schuth won their matches.

For Keyes (133 pounds), the two wins were a sign that he is getting back on track. He had lost two straight matches, both of which he thought he could have won.

Keyes, who is now 14-10, faced a familiar opponent in Mike Robinson against North Carolina.

My first match went into overtime Keyes said. That was against a kid that beat me at Beast of the East

but obviously wrestling for Ohio University and Joel Greenlee I trained a lot better and I was able to beat the kid.

Keyes said he thought that the match with North Carolina could have been won. He cited a few close matches as the cause.

Clay Tucker (157 pounds) dropped a 3-2 decision, Justin Powell (Heavyweight) lost and Germane Lindsey (141 pounds) lost 2-0.

North Carolina, though, had five wrestlers ranked in the top-20 in their respective weight classes. The Tar Heels won all five of those matches.
