Fair promotes healthy choices for students

The Campus Involvement Center is partnering with 50 vendors to provide free health screening, interactive games and prizes and free HIV/AIDS testing during the Health and Wellness Fair, 12-5 p.m. today in Baker University Center.

“The goal (of the Campus Involvement Center) is to give the student population information on how to lead a healthy lifestyle and make healthy choices,” said Matt VonderBrink, a senior studying health service administration and intern for the Campus Involvement Center. “The fair will provide a lot of interactive ways to learn about your health."

Hosted on all five floors of Baker, the fair will incorporate information and services from student organizations and businesses that are both local and outside of campus, VonderBrink said.

An annual tradition, the Campus Involvement Center also works with Promoting Ohio University Wellness, Education and Responsibility (POWER) and Greeks Advocating Mature Management of Alcohol (GAMMA) to plan the daylong event. The day is also co-sponsored by the three organizations, VonderBrink said.

In addition, the vendors volunteer their time and services at the fair. The Exercise and Physiology Club will provide body fat analysis tests and flexibility tests.

POWER and GAMMA will provide interactive games and give prizes to students who answer questions correctly.

GAMMA will use the upcoming spring break as a chance to remind students about safety and choices.

“(GAMMA’s booth) will disseminate information on alcohol consumption,” said Chris Suntala, a senior studying psychology and a member of GAMMA and Phi Kappa Psi. “Basically, we’re trying to get students to behave responsibly when drinking and to understand the repercussions.”

The Health and Wellness Fair has had upwards of 200 students who visited its booths in past years, VonderBrink said.
