New ID cards issued

When incoming freshmen at Ohio University go to receive their student identification cards, they will be different from the cards of years past: the cards will not store Social Security numbers.

The old cards left SSNs unencrypted on the magnetic strip, which both Alden Library and Ping Center used to identify students. With the new cards, students will be identified by personal identification numbers G

which frankly isn't very difficult to do they could very clearly see your SSN said Brice Bible, the university's chief information officer. G

even in an encrypted fashion

he said about identification cards in general.

Five university servers were breached last year, compromising the records and SSNs of hundreds of thousands of people affiliated with OU. The security breach brought national attention to the university's security systems and its use of SSNs.

I feel a little safer knowing that a way to get to my SSN is cut off

since apparently it has happened before close to home

said Matt Frires, a senior marine biology major.
