Last night’s Athens City School Board meeting – originally intended to reveal the
outcome of Chauncey Elementary – instead set its sights on other Athens school issues and upcoming plans.
At the beginning of the meeting, President Christian Gerig opened the floor up to any Chauncey supporters.
Autumn Bycofski, an avid member of the “Save Chauncey” group, reminded the
Board members of their adoration for the school and urged them to “Please find
another way.”
Martin pushed the verdict on Chauncey back to Feb. 23, to allow the Board to review all of the information they received.
In addition, the Board also mentioned their support for House Bill 116, regarding
public schools’ polices prohibiting harassment, intimidation, bullying, or cyber-
bullying. According to Superintendent Carl Martin, the Senate passed the bill 31 to 1.
“The bill provides policies to possible suspension of kids involved in cyber bullying
and it expands to cover bullying on school buses as well,” said Martin.
The bill is currently headed back to the House for concurrence.
