A collection of films produced by last year’s sophomore students will be screened together in a screening of first-year student work Saturday at the Athena Grand.
“All the students come from different backgrounds and places,” said Angelique Gibson, a second-year MFA student whose film Closet Space will be screened. “There will be stuff there that will make you laugh, stuff that make you cry, stuff that will make you think. It’s a great collection of films.”
Admission is free and open to the public. The screening will showcase multiple genres, including documentary-style, comedy and fantasy.
“It’s a group of students who completed their first year of boot camp, and this is where they get to show off their hard work,” said Steve Ross, director of the School of Film.
Selections for the screening were made based on each student’s portfolio of work, which includes two 13-minute narrative films and one 35-minute documentary.
“Personally, I think it’s great when students get a venue to showcase their talents, and the Athena Cinema has been really helpful in tying the School of Film with the citizens and students of Athens,” said Claire Berlin, manager of marketing and communications in the College of Fine Arts.
All the students were given tight parameters and budgets for their films, Berlin said in a news release, and each had to act as an editor, producer, screenwriter or costume designer or fill various other positions suited to different projects.
In addition to Gibson, the sophomore students whose first-year work will be shown include Stephen Blahut, Jon Coy, Rani Deighe Crowe, Luke Fisher, Michael Greene, Mladan Jurkovic, Sarah Leibman and Jeremy Zerechak.
“The priority was making good and clever choices in their filmmaking, and these students did a great job,” Ross said.
