Winter Intercession burglary, theft rates not unusual

Despite a series of New Year's Eve car vandalisms the number of crimes reported to Athens Police Department this winter break was not unusual.

The most typical crime reported during winter break was theft - with eight instances.

Walmart, 929 E. State St., reported four separate thefts, in which suspects stole an estimated $1,099 in goods, according to the report. In most of the cases, the suspects bought goods and attempted to return them at a higher price or with missing parts.

The other instances included a juvenile shoplifting an item worth $2 from the Family Dollar, 4 E.

Carpenter St.

Four burglaries were reported during the break, according to police reports. Two occurred at 151 Mill St. and 149 1/2 Mill St. around the same time. The other burglaries took place at 1 S. Congress St. and in Monticello Village apartments.

I have not heard anyone comment that there have been any more (burglaries) than usual

said Athens Police Captain Tom Pyle.

The cost of all the stolen goods is estimated at about $3,000, according to police reports.

Kiefer Gorton, a tenant at 149 1/2 Mill St. and a sophomore at Ohio University, said he felt less safe after discovering that someone entered his house and stolen his television.

I know I'm going to be bringing some more of my stuff home

Gorton said.

Although Pyle said there are no suspects in the burglaries, Athens police have recovered some goods from the thefts at Walmart, as well as a vehicle reported stolen in

Reynoldsburg, Ohio.

Police found the vehicle a couple days after it was reported missing. Eric D. Yancey, 30, of Coolville was arrested and charged with receiving stolen property, according to a report.

The calendar year ended after a rash of vehicles were vandalized during New Years Eve in the neighborhoods surrounding State Street, according to a police report. Unknown suspects vandalized two cars parked on E. State Street on Jan. 1, knocking their side view mirrors off.
