Women's Basketball: Bobcats find form to win preseason game

The women's basketball team won its lone exhibition game handily Wednesday night, beating Ohio Dominican 66-36 at The Convo.

For much of the first half, neither team lit up the scoreboard. With just less than six minutes remaining, Ohio led 14-10.

At this point, however, Ohio found its rhythm and pulled away from Ohio Dominican. The Bobcats held the Panthers to 29-percent shooting and forced 27 turnovers.

It's fun to watch them when they get after it like that

coach Semeka Randall said. I know we've had ten days of what they call 'intense practice ' and I know they were ready to be let out of the cage and just do their thing out there on the floor.

Tenishia Benson made her Bobcat debut after transferring from Cincinnati. She scored a game-high 17 points and grabbed seven rebounds.

It was exciting; I'm really getting the flow for the game Benson said. I'm playing with a different group of girls. I love it.

Ohio stressed getting the ball in the paint, and the strategy worked, as the team took only nine shots from beyond the 3-point line.

With this new offense

there is a lot of cutting and moving

but I just looked at the size

sometimes mismatches and being able to recognize who you have on you

center Thia Gholson said.

No player for Ohio Dominican scored in double figures. Katy Rasor led the Panthers with nine points.

I think a lot has to do with the fact that we defend... The hustle plays matter because we're just a scrappy team; that's just who we are

Randall said.

The Bobcats begin their regular season Sunday at home against Louisville, the first of two games against big non-conference opponents, as Memphis will visit The Convo Nov. 20.

Offensively

(we need to) slow down. We missed about six or seven layups

Randall said. It's really just going up and focusing on making that shot and not letting anybody allow you to miss to the shot.

Sunday's game will have extra meaning for Gholson, who is from Louisville.

It's going to be exciting; I am just going to try to keep myself focused on the game

whatever I have to think about at the time
