A pivotal figure in the transition from realism to impressionism in 19th century France, painter Édouard Manet, is widely considered to be one of the most influential painters of his time.
Now, through the Royal Academy of Arts in London, in association with BY Experience, NCM Fathom Events and the Athena Grand, fans of Manet’s art can experience his exhibition on the big screen through “Manet: Portraying Life,” an exclusive look at his life and career.
“The purpose of the event is to bring the world’s best painters to art lovers around the world who wouldn’t be able to see the work otherwise,” said Jessica Johnson, press associate for BY Experience. “Not everyone will be able to get to London to see this Manet exhibit.”
Hosted by Tim Marlow, the show will provide a behind-the-scenes look at the sold-out show. The show will be a detailed examination of the artist’s work, as several experts will also be joining the program to discuss various pieces, according to the film’s website.
This televised event will be the first-ever major exhibition in the U.K. devoted to the portraiture of Édouard Manet, according to NCM Fathom Events.
“The creators of the Exhibition series have taken pains to make sure the cinema event is contemplative and informative, while also providing the highest quality visuals of the art on screen,” Johnson said.
While the theater has not done a program such as this before, they believe they will still be able to gather up a good crowd, as the theater has been showcasing the trailer for the film before multiple movies and has been spreading the word about the event.
“We've had several calls about this show, so there's some curiosity out there amongst the public,” said Rick Frame, general manager of the Athena Grand. “I'm optimistic that we'll have a good crowd. We haven't done an event like this in the past either so it's something I'm looking forward to.”
Frame notes that, while the show is not a live event, they have been told that the program could run for up to two hours.
“The experience in theaters brings the work of the world’s greatest artists to life in a unique way,” said Michelle Portillo, senior manager of PR and Communications for Fathom Events. “Additionally, Fathom Events allow(s) many fans access to these great works for the first time as they are not available or accessible in their local communities.”
