Voinovich to serve as OU professor

Former Senator George Voinovich announced today he would serve as a professor at Ohio University.

Voinovich graduated from OU in 1958. Since then, he has served as the mayor of Cleveland, the governor of Ohio and a U.S. senator.

"We're excited to have him as part of our staff," OU President Roderick McDavis said.

Voinovich works with Cleveland State University as well. In addition to teaching, his duties at OU will include managing his senatorial and gubernatorial papers, both of which are now housed at OU

"We're really excited about being able to draw on his expertise and also the wealth of his connection," said Mark Weinberg, director of the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs.

Voinovich emphasized that he would not be working at OU full time.

"My promise for my family is that my main goal in life right now is to work with my wife to take care of ourselves ... and spend time with our grandchildren," he said.

Voinovich sat on a panel yesterday, along with Ohio Supreme Court Justice Yvette McGee Brown and Ohio House Speaker Jo Ann Davidson, to speak with OU students about leadership.

OU named the Voinovich School of Leadership and Public Affairs after Voinovich when he donated his gubernatorial papers for the school's collection.

Voinovich recently added his senatorial papers to the collection, and this morning, OU dedicated the newly named Voinovich Seminar Room in Alden Library.
