Miami RedHawks lose in triple overtime after last quarter comeback

Miami almost became the second Mid-American Conference team to pull off an upset over Minnesota in the first two weeks of the season, but fell 41-35 in triple overtime Saturday.

The Gophers had a 28-12 lead with only seven minutes left in the fourth quarter, but the RedHawks (1-1) came back to tie the game behind backup quarterback Daniel Raudabaugh.

Miami coach Shane Montgomery inserted Raudabaugh early in the game after falling behind by a few scores and came away impressed by his play.

Daniel did a great job in a tough situation

Montgomery said. I knew we were in a situation where we'd have to drop back and throw it almost every down and he's more of a dropback passer than our starter (Mike Kokal).

Raudabaugh's touchdown pass to Chris Givens late in the fourth quarter brought Miami within three, and Trevor Cook kicked a 36-yard field goal to tie the game at 28-28 with 11 seconds left.

Both teams scored in the first overtime and then failed to score in the second extra period. An interception by Minnesota's Jamal Harris in the third overtime allowed the Gophers (1-1) to pull off the win, with running back Amir Pinnix scoring from two yards out to give his team the victory.

Kent State was unable to contain Kentucky in a 56-20 barnburner. The game was tied 14-14 at halftime, but Kentucky pulled away with six second-half touchdowns.

The Wildcats racked up 266 rushing yards and six rushing touchdowns in the win.- Martin said. If he can step up in the pocket and keep his eyes downfield he'll be able to find some wide-open receivers for some explosion plays instead of just stepping through to run.

In conference play, Central Michigan beat Toledo 52-31 in a showdown between two of the favorites in the West Division. The game was tied 31-31 going into the fourth quarter, but the Chippewas reeled off three touchdowns in the final period to pull off the victory.

The Chippewas' tandem of quarterback Dan LeFevour and running back Ontario Sneed looked as impressive as ever, with LeFevour throwing for 244 yards, rushing for 51, and totaling four touchdowns.-

Jones said. We weren't one-dimensional and we're finally able to get the run game going a little bit.
