Musical duo engages crowd during Athens visit with classics and covers

Greg Anderson and Elizabeth Roe brought their musical talents to Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium on Sunday, playing for a crowd of several hundred people.

The duo’s repertoire ranged from classical pieces such as George Bizet’s “Carmen” and Mozart’s “Pagapeno” to modern selections including Radiohead’s “Paranoid Android” and Michael Jackson’s “Billie Jean.”

The crowd, consisting of people from all age groups, gave the duo a warm reception and prompted three encore performances.

“We felt like everybody is so invested and on our side,” Anderson said. “Instead of being concerned with what we were doing, we felt like we were really in the moment.”

The performers also enjoyed the audience’s enthusiasm.

“They were along for the ride,” Roe said. “That keeps us so motivated and inspired throughout the performance.”

Mary Lawless, a senior studying communication sciences and disorders, admired Roe’s animation and intensity.

“You can tell that she is feeling the music and that she is really into it,” Lawless said.

As a piano player herself, she was equally impressed by the complexity of the duo’s playing style.

“It was so neat to see their fingers fly across the (piano)” Lawless said.

Kyle Sanders, a senior studying exercise physiology also enjoyed the way Anderson and Roe collaborated while performing.

“(It’s) full of excitement. It rises and then slows down,” Sanders said. “I like the combination, they play well together.”

Anderson said that the performer’s spontaneity is what created a strong bond between him and Roe, making for unique performances.

“That’s one of the things that keeps the music alive for us,” Anderson said. “We are not robots. We don’t give the same exact performance every day.”
