Performance to pay tribute to women entertainers

Great women in entertainment aren't always recognized for their immense contribution in their field, which is why the Bodies In Motion student dance team will host a Tribute to Great Performers to recognize and share the gift women performers bring to the world of entertainment.

Bodies In Motion gives students the opportunity to express themselves and promote social interaction, said Ohio University junior Jennifer McGee, secretary of the organization and chairperson of the event.

The event will pay tribute to 10 performers, including Selena, Janet Jackson, Isadora Duncan, Aaliyah and Dorothy Dandridge. Women In History Inc., a company from Cleveland, will perform a monologue tribute to Isadora Duncan. Bodies In Motion will perform two dance numbers, along with a special guest performance by another Ohio University dance group, LOS DISCO. The tribute will also include a display of historical entertainment information.

Bodies In Motion has planned the event for a long time and can't wait for the tribute, McGee said. It is the first year for the tribute, which it hopes to do every year, she said.

I think it's an excellent idea to celebrate women performers because males are always being acknowledged

said OU sophomore Stephanie Ledford.

Ledford, an international business major, has been involved in dance and performance since a young age. She thinks men don't appreciate women for their talent, but rather for their looks, she said.

Women work harder to break the mold more so than male performers she said.

A Tribute to Great Performers is a free event open to the public. It begins at 3 p.m. Saturday in Mitchell Auditorium in Seigfred Hall.
