The hotly contested race for Athens County Sheriff is winding down, but the candidates are not turning in early as both seek to round up the final votes of the night.
With only an hour and a half left to vote, Democratic incumbent Pat Kelly and Republican challenger Steve Kane stood on opposing sides of the street outside Baker Center encouraging people to vote and handing out flyers for their campaign.
Both candidates are confident they will win the election.
“I feel good about the election. If people look at our last four years of accomplishments instead of a 30-day smear campaign, than we should win handily,” Kelly said.
Kane said the student body, as a whole, has been very supportive of him.
“I’ve had a lot of students walk up to me and say I was the only Republican they voted for on the ticket,” Kane said. “I’ve put 110 (percent) into it.”
Kelly believes his advantage will come from what he said is a higher turnout of Democrats in this election.
“I believe voter turnout (throughout) the county has been heavy, and that’s a good thing for Democrats,” Kelly said.
