Water system failure closes Grover Center

A valve failure in the chilled water piping system of Grover Center caused the cancellation of classes and activities in that building and the WellWorks wellness center yesterday, and both buildings remain closed today.

However, faculty teaching in Grover can make accommodations to hold classes in an alternate site, in which case students will be notified, said Jack Jeffery, Ohio University Communications and Marketing director. Students who do not receive notification from a professor about an alternate class location should not attend the class today, according to a Communications and Marketing news release.

WellWorks memberships can be used at Ping Center free of charge until further notice, according to the release.

We're giving faculty a chance to get in their offices and get things organized and cleaned

said Mick Harris, director of maintenance and operations for OU's facilities management division. We're trying to make the best of the situation.

The amount of damage is not yet known, but each OU building has insurance with a $100,000 deductible, Jeffery wrote in an e-mail. This means the university will pay $100,000 before the insurance company will make claim payments.

In a chilled-water system, the air conditioner cools water and then distributes the chilled water throughout the building to air conditioning units, according to www.engineeringtoolbox.com. 17
