Suspicious package sent to University building

Update: 3:12 p.m.

OUPD is managing the investigation alongside the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Weapons of Mass Destruction team from Wright Patterson Air Force Base, said Katie Quaranta, OU communications specialist.

Just after 11 a.m. today, an Ohio University employee opened a parcel of mail that contained a white, powdery substance. The mail was sent to the West Union Street Office Center.

As a precaution, the Ohio University Police Department evacuated the Legal Affairs and People's Bank section of the building and took other steps to isolate the area.

OUPD does not believe other areas of the building are affected at this time. The department is working with other agencies to identify the powder and sender of the letter.

At this time, police believe this is to be an isolated incident and no further action is needed by faculty, staff, and students. No other details are being released at this time.

No further information was known by the OU Communications Office by 1:25 p.m., said Katie Quaranta, OU communications specialist.

OUPD Chief Andrew Powers was unavailable for comment.
