Swimming and Diving: Bobcats lose first meet of season to Buckeyes

With a 197-81 win over conference rival Marshall, Ohio (3-1) reached it’s highest point total of the season on Friday.

Multiple swimmers achieved season highs including: Tori Bagan’s 200-yard breaststroke, Laurin William’s 1000 and 500-yard freestyle and freshman Carrie Dukes 100-yard butterfly.

Diver Kristin Capcik dominated both in the three-meter dive and one-meter dive, putting up a season best of 327.38 in the three-meter dive.

“I thought we came out ready to go,” Capcik said. “It was a lot of fun and a great opportunity to show everyone what we’ve got.”

But the fun did not last for the Bobcats.

After taking 15 of the 16 events against the Thundering Herd, Ohio struggled to maintain momentum against Ohio State, losing 196-106 and tallying it’s first loss of the season.

“It was still an exciting meet,” coach Derick Roe said. “It’s always good to go against top level competition. We still won four event wins, so there were some good points.”

Ohio State took 12 of the 16 events on Saturday including a full sweep in the 100-yard individual medley, which saw Ohio’s Rachel Stearns place fifth.

Capcik would secure her third NCAA Zone qualifying score after placing first in the one-meter dive with a score of 286.20.

On a positive note, Casey Papp took first with a 57.54 finish in the 100-yard butterfly event. Bagan also finished first in the 50-yard backstroke.

Roe said he was not in the slightest disappointed in his team’s performance as the back to back meets will help prepare for the Hokie Invitational next week.

“I thought they swam great,” Roe said. “Tori had a Merca infection earlier in the week and only had one real day of training and Casey had really been coming into her own.”

Ohio will have the week off and will continue it’s season in the Hokie Invitational at Virginia Tech Nov. 21.
