An Athens County Commissioner was arraigned on domestic violence charges in court yesterday.
Mark Sullivan, 51, was arraigned on one count of domestic violence in Athens County Municipal Court.
The charges stemmed from an incident March 25 when Sullivan allegedly struck his wife in the face causing injury, according to court documents.
Sullivan pleaded not guilty to the charge and was released on his own recognizance.
Domestic violence is a first-degree misdemeanor. Sullivan could spend 180 days in jail and pay a maximum fine of $1,000 if convicted, according to the Ohio Revised Code.
He is due back in court April 20 at 8 a.m.
This is the second time Sullivan has been in court in the past year.
He was arrested for disorderly conduct and drug abuse in Nelsonville in October. Sullivan pleaded guilty to two counts of disorderly conduct and the drug abuse charge was dismissed. He was fined $360.
Sullivan has been county commissioner since 1998
and is up for re-election this year.
