YOUR TURN: Party 'snubs' members for making individual choices

I am writing this letter in great dismay as to the recent behavior I have seen from the Democrat Party in Athens County, despite the fact that I am a strong supporter of the Democrat Party in Ohio.

This quarter, I had the chance of working with Jill Thompson during her campaign to continue as the County Auditor. Although I am a Democrat and she is a Republican, it does not take long for people to figure out that Jill was the right person for the job.

It was to my utter dismay, however, to see the Democrat candidate for auditor. Pat Sikorski was extremely ill-qualified for the position of Athens County Auditor. The Democrat Party, however, ignored all of this, emphasizing only that their candidate was a Democrat.

In addition, on Election Day, a campus coordinator for the Democrats looked at my literature and sneered at me and made rude comments to me, not knowing that I was a Democrat; ignoring the possibility that I had voted Democrat at the state and national level.

This behavior is unacceptable in party representatives. This election day, a mandate was given from the American people, and this was not a mandate for the nation to become Democrat. It was a mandate to have those in power listen to their constituents.

A party that snubs and ignores members of the other party does a poor job of this, and a party that snubs its own members because they make their own decisions is a failure.Jennifer Brown is a senior political science major.
