After three retirements and two term endings, Ohio University's College of Arts and Sciences introduced two new directors and three chairs in the college.
Three faculty retirements and the normal rotation of chair positions after term completions left five vacant positions filled by four OU faculty and one administrator, said Benjamin Ogles, dean of the College of Arts and Sciences.
Department faculty members nominate a candidate for the position, and the dean makes the appointments, Ogles said.
Chairs typically serve a single three to five year term, though some serve two terms, Ogles said.
It's like a rotation
he said. Often they just want to do it for 3 or 5 years because someone has to do it.
New directors in the college are Catherine Marshall, interim director of the Office of Education Abroad, who will make $53,000, and Michele Morrone, director of Environmental Studies, who will make $63,663.
Department chair positions also were filled by Timothy Anderson, chair of the Geography Department, who will make $80,573; Tadeusz Malinski, chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry, who will make $154,250; and Susan Sarnoff, chair of the Social Work Department, who will make $54,385.
Appointees, chosen July 1, are filling existing positions in the college, Ogles said. Retiring faculty vacated the posts of director of the Office of Education Abroad, director of Environmental Studies and the chair of the Geography Department.
After serving as chair of the Department of Chemistry and Biochemistry for 10 years, Kenneth Brown returned to his faculty position, Ogles said. Rich Greenlee, previous chair of the Social Work Department, took part-time positions in Appalachian Outreach in the Provost's office and the Social Work Department, he said.
The chair position entails a lot of administrative work, including scheduling courses and handling the budget, Ogles said. Some do not mind the extra work, but others prefer to return to teaching and research, he said. Chairs continue to instruct courses, as do directors, unless it is an administrative position, such as the interim director of the Office of Education Abroad, he said.
Chairs receive course reductions, said Anderson. He stated that he will instruct three courses instead of five while serving his five-year term.
The position of interim director of Education Abroad, held by Marshall, is an administrative position, so there is no set term, but as Ogles and Provost Kathy Krendl discuss restructuring the Office of Education Abroad, they will not advertise for a long-term director until winter or spring, Ogles said.
She's doing an excellent job though and I wouldn't be surprised if she applied for the position he said.
Morrone is limited to a 5-year term, Ogles said. Ogles would like the position to have regular faculty turnover similar to the chair positions, he said.
