LGBT and Women's centers partnering for Queer Women in film series

With the recent release and success of the film Blue is the Warmest Color, the portrayal of queer women in film is expanding and opening up questions as to how well queer women are being represented in the media.

Tuesday, the Women’s Center will start off a monthly series of movies featuring queer women in Baker University Center with the movie The Incredibly True Adventure of 2 Girls in Love.

“We realized that we haven’t done much around queer women,” said Delfin Bautista, director of the LGBT Center. “The film series will highlight the experiences of queer women.”

Bautista said the LGBT Center and Women’s Center are partnering together to put on the series.

“We’re excited to work with the LGBT Center,” said Sarah Jenkins, program coordinator for the Women’s Center.

The series will have four separate showings of different movies portraying queer women including Fire, Better than Chocolate and Pariah.

“There is no one film that will adequately portray all queer women,” Jenkins said. “I’m looking forward to introducing people to some less mainstream and more diverse views on queer women.”

Jenkins said the term “queer” is used to encompass, or be an “umbrella” to describe, different identities of LGBT people.

Jenkins said she chose more independent films because she believes they often have a wider portrayal of queer women than mainstream films do.

“It’s important for students to see diverse representations of different folks, especially if they are representations that we don’t normally see on television or (in) movies,” Jenkins said.

After each film there will be a student-led discussion.

“I’m going to be the worker who is there watching the movies, providing facts and asking questions after the movie,” said Hannah Abrahamson, a junior studying Spanish.

Abrahamson said she hopes to bring more attention to queer women through the series.

“It is a subject that is typically not approached; queer women are very rarely represented in film,” Abrahamson said.

Jenkins said people who are interested in the topic should attend the series.

“I think in large, the community is pretty well accepted,” Abrahamson said. “The fact that we have an LGBT Center is more than other universities have.”
