Tax, vending policies on the table at tonight's council meeting

After last week’s discussion of Ohio House Bill 601 — which would standardize municipal tax codes throughout the state — Athens City Council will likely pass a resolution tonight that would formally condemn the proposed legislation.

The bill was a source of frustration for many council members including Jeff Risner, D-2nd, who said at last week’s meeting that the bill was “ludicrous.”

“I don’t see the point of this,” Risner said. “The whole thing looks like a joke.”

Besides addressing matters at the state-level, council members will also tackle the city’s vending code.

An ordinance introduced tonight for first reading would consolidate the number of vending licenses for Union Street from 14 to 10, said Councilman Steve Patterson, D-at large.

Consolidation is an attempt to encourage vendors to have a permanent presence in the uptown area, Patterson said.

“This is all being done in the spirit of economic development,” he said.

Council will also discuss whether to allow the city to accept bids for a wastewater facilities improvement project Monday night at 7:30 p.m. at the City Building.
