Global event to highlight gaming enthusiasts

In the wake of Good Friday, one student organization will provide a venue for students to indulge in their favorite board and card games and join in the worldwide celebration of International Tabletop Day.

Bobcat Tabletop Club, in collaboration with The Residents’ Action Council, will meet in the Jefferson Hall library Saturday to host a day-long session of tabletop gaming, which will include more than 90 different games to meet a wide variety of gaming tastes.

Since organizing the club in February, the members of Bobcat Tabletop meet in the Jeff Hall library each Thursday to play their favorite tabletop games, which typically range from deck-building card games, such as Magic: The Gathering, to more mainstream classics like chess.

Helen Cothrel, a sophomore studying astrophysics and Bobcat Tabletop’s treasurer, said the club’s previous organization of similar events have been well received.

“We did this one MLK Jr. Day Weekend and were pretty successful,” Cothrel said. “We had about 60 people come in throughout the course of the day from 11 a.m. to about 3 a.m.”

Rob Rennich, Bobcat Tabletop’s adviser, said that the student organization was adamant to find funding through tRAC for the project upon hearing of International Tabletop Day.

“When International Tabletop Day was announced, Bobcat Tabletop planned for that day for their all-day program,” Rennich said. “I think it’ll be interesting to see what happens because it’s a pretty big event worldwide.”

tRAC will sponsor the event and provide food and drinks for attendees.

Cothrel said the group would also use additional funding from Student Senate to purchase new games that the organization will get to keep in its collection for future gatherings.

John Rawski, the club’s president and a sophomore studying health services administration, said this funding will allow for a more varied experience that the group hopes will get more students involved.

“Pretty much any type of tabletop game — from card to board to miniatures — we’ll have it,” Rawski said. “From games that can go for just 20 minutes to those that can last six hours or more.”
